Research Activities

During the years the research activity dealt with methodological topics and various applications, such as automotive control” (engine control and vehicle dynamics control, e.g. ASP and ESP), ship dynamic positioning, optimization and simulation of manufacturing plants, plasma shape identification in tokamak reactors, modeling and control of Deep Brain Stimulation technique, modeling and optimization of electrical microgrids. He published more than 100 papers on international journals and conferences  and edited two books for Springer-Verlag. He is a senior member of IEEE; member of ASME, SIAM, SAE. He was associate editor of Dynamics and Control (Kluwer) and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and participated to the organization of various international conferences. He proposed the constitution of the IEEE Control Systems Society Technical Committee on Automotive Controls that he presided for four years.

He was Principal Investigator of research activities with various automotive companies such as Magneti Marelli Powertrain Division in Bologna, Centro Ricerche FIAT in Orbassano (TO), ELASIS in Pomigliano d’Arco (NA), FMA in Pratola Serra (AV), Centro Sviluppo Materiali SpA in Rome, and the Institute for Economic Research Guglielmo Tagliacarne in Rome.  He was and is Principal Investigator of research programs financed by the Italian Ministry of Research and participates in two European Research projects on energy management, under the Artemis platform and under the FP7.
